Nick Gorham

Nick Gorham of Coventry, Providence and Block Island RI is a partner in the firm of Gorham & Gorham, Inc. in Scituate, RI. He is a 1979 graduate of Moses Brown School, the University of Rhode Island (B.A. 1983) and Boston University School of Law School cum laude (J.D. 1989) where he was named a G. Joseph Tauro Scholar and Edward F. Hennessey Distinguished Scholar. As an attorney, he is involved in personal injury law, real estate law, municipal and school law, municipal bond law, business law, corporate transactions, complex litigation, product liability and admiralty. He has served as trial and appellate counsel in several important cases decided by the Rhode Island Supreme Court. He received the RI Trial Lawyers “Case of the Year” award in September 2002 for his work as trial and appellate counsel in two successive cases which changed the landscape for all insurance claims in Rhode Island, Skaling v. Aetna Ins. Co. Nick has tried more than a hundred cases in RI Courts, including RI Superior Court, District Court, Family Court, United States District Court and nearly every other tribunal in the state. He has argued more than 25 cases before the RI Supreme Court.

From 1999-2009 Nick was a member of the RI House of Representatives (R-District 40 Foster, Glocester & Coventry). He was widely recognized for his tenacity, good nature and vision on important issues. He was awarded the “Golden Broom Award” by Operation Clean Government, and recognized for “Distinguished Service” by Common Cause RI for his work as the prime sponsor of the “Separation of Powers” legislation in 2001, 2002 and 2003 that was placed on the ballot in November 2004 and passed by greater than 70% of the electorate. In 2005 he was elected House Minority Whip by his peers, a position he held until leaving the House in 2009. His work as a State Representative on the Separation of Powers amendments to the Rhode Island Constitution are chronicled in Phil Wests’s book Secrets and Scandals: Reforming RI 1986-2006. Nick has served as Probate Judge (Town of Smithfield 2012-14) and served on the Commission for Judicial Tenure and Discipline until term-limited (2009-16). Between 2014-22, he served as Town Solicitor for the Town of Coventry, RI’s seventh largest municipality. Nick currently serves as the Chief Municipal Court Judge in Burrillville. He and his wife Roseanna have two children, Austin and Alejandra.
