Pedestrian Liability

This summer the roads are packed with walkers, joggers, runners and cyclists. Here are some of the rules of the road that you should know about, whichever way you chose to travel:

For walkers, joggers and runners, State Law requires:

1) Walkers, joggers and runners to travel on the left hand side of the road whenever practicable;

2) When there’s a sidewalk, walkers must use it, joggers and runners can travel on the road, if they so choose;

3) Joggers and runners to wear reflective clothing one-half hour after sunset to one half hour before sunrise. (Walkers are not required to wear reflective clothing!)

For Cyclists:

1) Anyone riding a bike age fifteen (15) or under whether operating the bike or a passenger on the bike must wear a helmet if traveling on a public highway, bicycle path or any public right of way. The helmet must fit the person’s head and be secured by a strap.

2) Cyclists are required to ride on the right side of the road, and as far to the right as possible.

3) The number of persons on a bike cannot exceed the number it is equipped to carry (example: one seat, one rider). A cyclist can, surprisingly, carry a child in a backpack or sling, however!

4) Not more than two cyclists can ride abreast in the road except when the road or path is for the exclusive use of cyclists.

5) Cyclists must keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.

6) Every bicycle in use at nighttime must be equipped with a lamp in the front and a red reflector or a red light on the rear. All new bikes must have on the pedals.

6) Bikes cannot have sirens or whistles!

Rollerskates, coasters, toy vehicles and the like are prohibited on roads except for the purpose of crossing a road.
